Skip the Grass and Try These Alternatives Instead

Everyone would love to have a beautiful lawn, but when most people think of the costs and upkeep, it might make them want to change their mind about how badly they want that sought after symbol of home health. However, what if there were alternatives that cut out much of the work associated with having a green lawn? If you are someone that wants a grass alternative in your yard, the following options are worth considering.

Wood Chips

This lawn cover is a great way to get some coverage that is very low maintenance and easy. Wood chips are easily affordable and look nice immediately upon application. They of course require no watering at all, and chips can be replenished by simply dumping more into the desired area. They also inhibit weed growth. The only upkeep they might need will be removing leaves. The way that wood chips compress when weight is applied to them makes them a great choice for play areas. Wood chips are also ideal when you live in an area with little rainfall.

Wild Flowers

These beautiful little flowers can be purchased in packs of seeds quite easily from a variety of locations. They require very little maintenance and a lot less water than grasses. Another great thing about wildflowers is that they are an attractive choice for yards with uneven layout, and these little flowers will easily grow and cover rocky ground and slopes of different shapes.

Gravel

As one of the lowest maintenance options you can find, gravel is inexpensive and can be used in a variety of ways. There are a wide range of gravel types, colours, sizes and shapes to choose from, and it can be found at most garden centres. Obviously, gravel requires no watering at all. It inhibits the growth of wild plants and weeds and is a great option for pet owners. The hardness and shape of gravel makes it the least suitable choice for play areas.

Moss

In a shaded or covered type of yard, moss might be an excellent option. Moss is available in a plethora of textures and types, so there are options that can even mimic the look and feel of a small grass. Mosses do require more watering in drier climates but are still relatively low maintenance in comparison to grass. Moss is similar to grass in that it can grow over time, so you still need to trim it. Luckily, a regular lawn edger works just as well with moss as it does with grass.
